PostSubject: Astrophytum hybrids without a name yet   Tue Sep 14, 2010 5:38 pm

Hi, this is my first posting here.

I have some weird astrophytum hybrids.
Are there any fancy japanese names for these types, or am I free to name them?

this looks like a yellow "Superkabuto", but itīs a coahuilense * asterias

and a "normal" A. myriostigma tulense

Hope you like them.

Nice plants, heaps of potential. They are too young for naming purposes wait a while and see how they develop.

I'm so glad you are following my journey. The fist two look like they could be monstrose but lets just wait and see Smile

You can not tell names for 1st and 2nd ones becuase of too young and grafted.
3rd one is Hakuran-kabuto.
Yellow color is Akebono-han, meaning twilight variegation.
Akebono-han must be created by the stress of hybridization.
Both of coahuilense and asterias flowers have yelloow petals and orange throat.
Since both species are same group, Akebono-han will never appear on these hybrid.

I think the asterias was a hybrid, had another gene.
Have you collect seeds by yourself?

Hanazono,

I have some about 30 years old astros.
My daughter asked me:Do cacti produce fruits?
So I produced some fruits with the paintbrush.
Showed her a dragon fruit from the super market - it did not taste.
I sawed some seeds.
So I am not absolutely sure which genes are in which cactus.
It was just for fun, no scientific research.

>>I think the asterias was a hybrid, had another gene.
I bought the coahuilense last year, got it with a fruit and the seller told me:
Pollinated with asterias.
But may be it was a asterias with superkabuto genes.

You collect good size of Astrophytum.
Your asterias next to an Echinopsis may also be mixed another gene, I think.

If the plant propagated by crossing between coaphuilense and superkabuto, you shoud call it "Hakuran-super".
I have several F1 Hakuran-super made by myself.
The photo is one of them. This plant, 10 cm daimeter has also Akebono-han partially.

Hanazono,

thank you very much for your help.
>>Your asterias next to an Echinopsis may also be mixed another gene, I think.
Oops, it is about 30 years old and the seed came from Haage.
It is on its own roots.
So I think it should be an original one.

But I just bought some asterias seeds from the US - will see how big the difference is.

Your Hakuran-super is a beautiful plant indeed.

The normal asterias life is around 20 years.
The shape of asterias becomes ugly when plant was very old.
You maitain your asterias very well.

Hanazono,

thanks again.
I have let it grow slowly, without too much care. Without pushing it with too much
water or fertilizer.
