PostSubject: Mystery Ariocarpus   Thu Nov 08, 2012 11:08 pm

Hi Everyone, I have had an Ariocarpus turn up that I am not really sure what type it is. The seeds said that it is ariocarpus retusus ssp. trigonus.
All the other seeds in that batch (40 or so germinated) have come up looking normal, like what they should look like. Most of them were grafted and all of the grafts look pretty much identical, except for one which is looking very different. Now that the mature tubercles are showing up, they have an unusual look to them, almost like a Fukuryu pattern seen on some Astrophytums. It's only on the top of the tubercles. Any ideas? It's only showing up on the mature tubercles. I'd like to hear your thoughts, Thanks.

I think this one is not trigonus, furfuraceus mixed Sugri cauliflower gene.
The character of cauliflower is appeared on matured tubercles only.

I have been looking for cv Cauliflower for a long time now, and never found any for sale that were here in Australia. How good is that?

I bought 20 seeds and sowed in 2005.
Just 1 plant showed a mild cauliflower character.
The following photo is the plant.

Since it was just 1 plant, I crossed with other plants, not showing cauliflwer character and increased numbers.
1 of grafted seedlings showing a good character was in flower last autumn and I crossed back.
The plant has made a fruit and it has been the time of harvesting.

Yours looks promising IX, time will tell. the earlier they produce the trait the more pronounced it will be.

I actually went last night and looked over all the other Arios from that batch and found a second, which shows some of the characteristics, though not as fully as the first, so I am pretty pleased with that discovery.
