PostSubject: Cactus ID?   Mon Feb 02, 2015 4:59 pm

Hi All,

I'm new to this site and just moved into a new place. There is a cactus(?) growing in the back year, hoping someone could help me identify it Smile

Thanks in advance!

Sorry, the broken image link appears. As I am a new member, I am prohibited from making external links.

Unless you already saw the pictures and they aren't of high enough quality?

I guess I can repost when I am able to make external links.

hmm... google Cereus peruvianus and see how that compares with your pics. Could be wrong however. The long spindly growth is a bit of a worry, may be growing too fast in too rich soil or perhaps not enough direct sunlight so its got spindly growth. Regardless don't be afraid to dig it up and move it while its relatively small to a sunnier well drained position as they transplant easily. You can even leave it to dry for weeks with no worries. Once planted it will root rapidly and start to grow again in spring and they can get to be quite a sizable tree.

It's also known as the "Apple Cactus" because it produces red edible fruits.  I have a small one so I'll be waiting a long time LOL.  What you will get are huge white flowers which open in the evening and last exactly one night!

Yes that's right, do you happen to know if they are self fertile and will set fruit on its own. I have one that's about 4m tall and growing arms now but no fruit yet.

A good question. Googling it brings up responses similar to this one:

"Self pollinating clone, not all grown by all growers are self pollinating but can be pollinated by another nearby as Cereus peruvianus is very fertile."
http://mattslandscape.com/detail/?plant_name=Cereus%20repandus%20aka%20cereus%20peruvianus

So we may both need another plant. I've seen pictures of the monstrose form bearing fruit. Now that would be a second plant worth having!
