PostSubject: Saguaro Seedlings Questions...   Tue Aug 25, 2015 1:12 am

1. When should they be fertilised? Mine are almost a week old now, but no spine growth yet.

2. Can I graft Saguaro seedlings onto Pereskiopsis? If so, at what age?

3. How much light is needed at 1 week? 1 or 2 CFL tubes?

I would leave them under "seedling conditions" for a few months at least. Then slowly dry them out over a few weeks. I am certainly no grafting expert but I have found hardened off seedlings to be significantly more successful when grafting as opposed to freshly germinated ones.

They shouldn't need fertilizing for a long time. When they are small and manageable just re-pot them into fresh soil. But that of course depends on the quality of your soil too.

I researched a little, Saguaros don't root from cuttings, so grafting would be pointless. Unless you know of a stock big enough to support an adult Saguaro!

Aztekium is another species that has the same problem. Luckily saguaros grow significantly quicker then they do.

When I tried 2-3 years ago I had 100% germination however the seedlings didn't like the hot humid environment and just a few survived.  Trich seedlings in the same environment were fine.  I took from this saguaros need to be aired sooner than later.  Good luck.
