looks like a Lemaireocereus marginatus (mexican fence post), however the spines look a bit to long, looks like it could be crossed with t. bridgesii??????
anyone agree or disagree?
peace

i just looked in one of my books and yes it does look like a Stenocereus marginatus (same thing?) thats really cool, they use it as a living fence. but yeah the spines are too long, a relative?

https://www.deserttotropics.com/Stenocereus_marginatus.php
similarish.

lol i don't think its an intra-generic hybrid with a Trichocereus though.
hey wait a sec look at the first pic, on one side there is a pilosocereus sp. and on the other a Trichocereus bridgesii. amazingly, it does look like a cross between the two! Laughing

well, it is possible.
for it to be occur there has to be two mature flowering size cacti, one of each specified species in the vicinity. these then have to flower simultaneously, then be cross-pollinated and viable hybrid seed produced. then the fruit must ripen, and the seed fall to the ground, then miraculously germinate despite the severe water deficiency and survive the inital development stages against all odds. then it must grow for how ever many years until it is the size pictured.
its highly unlikely.lol Wink

if so it represents a remarkable botanical discovery worthy of being published in a journal.
to say the least, inter-generic hybrids are rather rare in the cactus family considering the popularity of the plants and the number of collectors and interested individuals. it is actually quite hard to create an inter-generic hybrid unless the plants used are very closely related. eg lophophora x turbinicarpus. there are exceptions to this rule eg. Echinocereus x Toumeya. the less closely related the parents the less likely a successful cross. Intra-generic hybrids (within a Genus) are much easier. most possible inter-generic hybrids are well documented.

ok i'm quite new to all this, just starting on my journey and loving it!
as hard as inter-generic hybrids are to happen it just seems quite a big coincidence that the plant in the middle looks like a hybrid of the larger 2 on each side. thanks for the info lewis, it's great learning from the more experienced cactophiles on this forum, i have learnt so much in a very short space of time and am very greatfull for this. although it seems like i have alot more to learn Embarassed

I meant that it looks like a cross between the two on either side of it sarcastically lol . It really does!! remarkably so!
but hey im a beginner too and as i said my knowledge of coulmnars is minimal, and i'm hardly experienced.i could well be wrong. It'd be awesome if it actually was an inter-generic hybrid though!!

inter-generic hybrids are EXTREMELY rare, it usually won't work unless the cacti in question are very closely related and even then it's pretty unlikely.

There is some Trichonopsis hybrids out there, but they are very closely related and Trichos are now Echinopsis anyway.

Yeah looks like Stenocereus sp. but not totally sure if it's S. marginatus, looks abit different to me, but then again I have never grown them so am not an authority on them or even that knowledgable on the genus.

Nice chunky Pilosocereus azurescens in the side of the shot. Awesome T. bridgesii, my favourite brand of Tricho.

I have a nice trichoxechinopsis plant, awesome flowers, which i crossed back with Tpach. Seedlings are very fragile and all start off white with only a fraction actually growing. Hopefuly a few pull through. So yeh, even closely related half cousins arent all that compatible so its highly unlikely that anything so distantly related would produce offspring.

Hi all, we have Lemaireocereus marginatus (mexican fence post) and the spines are no where near as long as these pictured.in fact ours are so short that you;d hardly know they were spines and they grow straight out form the body of the plant a bit like a row of bristles. hope that some of the lengths we have will pop pups . the pant was so large and tall that we had to cut it up to transport it! 14 foot tall !
